CHINA

CHINA DESIGN TASK FORCE
Following the delivery of a market entry strategy document for the UK design sector to China, Christine Losecaat recommended the formation of the China Design Taskforce.

The China Design Taskforce works with British government organisations and industry trade bodies to raise the profile of British design to buyers, intermediaries, public sector and press in greater China and to help attract Chinese design buyers to consider British design expertise in their procurement.

The Chinese Government’s five-year programme, ratified in March 2006, focuses on the creation of a knowledge-led, innovation-orientated economy supported by greater domestic consumption. The taskforce is made up of British design companies that have significant international experience, particularly in Asia. It was formed specifically to help British design into this challenging and exciting market and to help Chinese design buyers find a way into the talent and expertise that the UK has to offer. The task force is co-ordinated by the Creative and Media Unit at UK Trade & Investment.

BEIJING OLYMPICS
Little Dipper is leading a delegation of British designers to Shanghai and Beijing to coincide with the last week of the Olympic Games.

Now is a very relevant time to be highlighting issues of design effectiveness in China, as the country will begin to focus on the UK as the next Olympic host nation.

The mission will include seminars in both Shanghai and Beijing, with a Beijing ‘creative day’ on 22 August, a Royal Institute of British Architects’ seminar in the morning, and a design effectiveness seminar in the afternoon. The UK Minister of State for Trade and Investment, Lord Jones of Birmingham, will participate in the Beijing seminar.

TORINO

Christine Losecaat is working with Torino – World Design Capital 2008, together with Michael Thomson, to deliver an international design policy conference and the International Design Casa.

Shaping the Global Design Agenda

Shaping the Global Design Agenda is an international conference on national design strategies for prosperity and well-being and takes place Nov 6 & 7 in the Lingotto Conference Centre in Torino.

Design is a powerful tool for innovation and competitiveness. In a globalising world, national policies for design are increasingly recognised as an important means of shaping future prosperity and well being. This is true for both developed and developing economies.

But who exactly are the policies targeted at and what sort of policies are the most effective? What measures can governments initiate to stimulate sustainable innovation through design and what insights can be gained from international best practice in design promotion and design support?

Through exploring current best practice from around the world, this international conference - targeted at design promoters, government policy makers, industrialists, academics, educators and designers - will seek to shape the global design agenda.

International Design Casa
Thinking around other ways of understanding, practising and developing design, “International Design Casa” opens up a comparison between the design culture of Torino and Italy with that of other cities and countries around the world. Some of the most prestigious bodies linked to design will temporarily find a ‘home’ in Torino and open the doors to the public to make themselves known, to present their own national design situation, the policies adopted to promote it, and future prospects.
